Facing your Giants

The young boy squats at the creekside, searching for 5 good stones, he is a lucky young man. His focus is on 5 smooth stones, the stones which can sit in a sling and bring down Goliath, who challenges the word of God. ....

David is always facing Giants, and your are too. You are always facing Giants. And its not always that he did a good job...

if you focus on Giants, you will fall, but if You focus on God, you won't fail. See 1 Samuel 17. David mentions God 9 times, but only on Goliath twice. Are u mediating on God more than your mistakes or is it the other way round ?

The 5 decisions we make
1) The stone of the past: Remember the God led victories of the past, how God have brought down your enemies in the past.
2) The stone of prayer: Dont' face your Giants first without facing God.
3) The stone of priority: The priority of Life is the Name of God, and it could be that God is letting u face this Giant, to let Him show you his strength. Our priority is not our comfort, our priority is God's Glory
4) The stone of passion: Passion of life, have the passion that David have, how David fought the challenge with God's hand. When's e last time u ran toward your Giant? Typically we run away from our problems. But Don't ! Run toward your giant
5) Stone of persistence: We need to be ready to fight our problems repeatedly, again again and again.

And we know in time that Giant will go down. No Giant is too big, if God is YOUR God. Face YOUR God and your giants will fall. But focus on YOUR Giants, and you will.

Some on Eagle's wings, others on Chicken wings

The last 5 days of my life have been rather hectic, intensive, emotional , and totally something that i WOULD WANT to go through all over again if i had a chance. I spent Monday preparing for the EyE Exco Election camp, which was held on Tues and Wed. Then on Thurs, i pulled an overnighter for some major presentation that we had at work . Totally exhilarating but yet very very ( X 1000000) meaningful .

Election Camp: Participants had to go through gruelling 20 min interviewing sessions, followed by a intensive overnight strategy challenge, where the briefing was conducted by me. We had the presentation the following morning, followed by the voting during tea time. The elections ended with a bbq and the annouement of the results.

Learning Lessons: Was feeling particularly trigger happy ( due to alot of stress and lack of sleep ) in the last few days, don't know why my surgency so damn high, resulted in my body language being very aggressive at times. Apparently alot of the candidates were very scared of me. Loh Lamb feedbacked to me that i when i speak, my palms should be facing inwards towards me rather than away from me. He said i was quite intimidating and cocky when i did that. My phrasing also appeared to be rude at times. it was always " i want this or that" ... not very diplo..

Post event reflection: I felt ambivalent, in some sense one will feel happy coz the s*** is finally over, but on the contrary, its the s*** which built bonds and really fostered the relationships between the EyE peeps. So many things have changed . This CCA has really pushed us to become better leaders and communicators, decision makers, and learning to repect others. Such a great CCA! What more can you ask for? All those times that we hung out together, debated with each other, taking time to see each other's point of view. The bonds that we formed, i'd say its very hard to replicate such bonds in other CCAs which are more sports based and such. Also, what i trully enjoyed is the process of learning from each other. I think that is very very valuable. A big Thankyou to all my exco peeps, and also special mention to ZB (goat), LW ( Lamb), JB (mangix... hurhh !) , Jeremy ( Chingy), XH ( Buffet) and Angie ( Owl ), you guys have had a very very positive impact on my life and i really appreciate you guys for it !

I feel that everyone is put out to 'fly' in life, but there is a certain period where u have to train your own wings, and this training comes about through non academic activities. It could be CCA, care for your family, counselling others, and above all, God. All these things eventually will determine how you soar above problems and difficulties in life, whether you can handle things on the ground and yet maintain your perception on what's going around you. If you dont' train and mature yourself, then you will always be like a chicken , running on the ground and just trying to solve the smaller issues in life.

Reflections for Overnighter at DF: In short, we had to prepare some big timer stuff, so had to stay back. I think what's more import that i should share here is the lessons i learnt when working through the late night.
1) Always strive to do your best for everything, do not give up in a task, but thing of new ways on how to approach it
2) Stay calm under pressure, Always continue to think in everything you do, so that you dont' lose valuable minutes being a scatter brain.
3) Be humble: Even when your boss tells you off, i should not become defensive over my actions. If i'm wrong, i should just admit it and continue to strive forward.

Alright, that's about it. Lastly, here is a reciepe for Eggs Benedict

SERVINGS & SCALING
Original recipe yield: 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 egg yolks
  • 3 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 pinch ground white pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
  • 8 strips Canadian-style bacon
  • 4 English muffins, split
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

DIRECTIONS

  1. To Make Hollandaise: Fill the bottom of a double boiler part-way with water. Make sure that water does not touch the top pan. Bring water to a gentle simmer. In the top of the double boiler, whisk together egg yolks, lemon juice, white pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and 1 tablespoon water.
  2. Add the melted butter to egg yolk mixture 1 or 2 tablespoons at a time while whisking yolks constantly. If hollandaise begins to get too thick, add a teaspoon or two of hot water. Continue whisking until all butter is incorporated. Whisk in salt, then remove from heat. Place a lid on pan to keep sauce warm.
  3. Preheat oven on broiler setting. To Poach Eggs: Fill a large saucepan with 3 inches of water. Bring water to a gentle simmer, then add vinegar. Carefully break eggs into simmering water, and allow to cook for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. Yolks should still be soft in center. Remove eggs from water with a slotted spoon and set on a warm plate
  4. While eggs are poaching, brown the bacon in a medium skillet over medium-high heat and toast the English muffins on a baking sheet under the broiler.
  5. Spread toasted muffins with softened butter, and top each one with a slice of bacon, followed by one poached egg. Place 2 muffins on each plate and drizzle with hollandaise sauce. Sprinkle with chopped chives and serve immediately.

A good team, a good team indeed

Just had dinner with e EyE exco team at Cafe Biz @ Traders Hotel. Esther, Dan , Esmond and Sumit couldn't make it but nonetheless everyone still had good fun. Had a very good discussion with xinhong on risk management. According to Xinhong, Risk mgmt comes stems from the CEO, whether he/she understands the product, and whether he or she is willing to make the decision to go ahead with the business strategy or not.

What Xinhong said is very true, you need some solid ppl as CEO to understand the type of biz that he/she is going into and the risks involved. However, it might always be possible, through middle mgmt 'filtering' and personal agendas , that a business idea has its benefits overhyped and its risks under projected. Crucial information such as modelling assumptions and detailed technical aspects are not reflected completely in the presentation to the Board/CEO. So even if the CEO is very very sharp, he/she might not fully understand the extent of the risk exposure due to the lack of complete information . This is where the process of risk management helps greatly because it puts in place a system to ensure constant identifying risks in new issues and ideas and enforces an actual quantification of risk so as to 'commit to it with a greater degree of accruacy' as opposed to a 'shooting the stars' method. Of course, its kinda important that you dont' just think that the numbers derived are the final answer. Numbers lead/guide you some where, but they are never the final answer.

At the end of the day, when the processes are actually in place, then it is really the CEO's call whether they want to go ahread with a certain decision. And its really important that a CEO does not do something with the rational that the rest of the market is doing it. So therefore if we don't join in, we will lose out. While that might work for certain projects, it should not be on a consistent basis. Look at the subprime crisis. Following the herd was a costly lessons for some of the banks. Because firstly, it simlar mean that no one was really sure of a sure win strategy, and either were they really aware of the full downside that the CDOs could generate.

I think i got to write more risk mgmt stuff. I think Risk mgmt is great. It really helps to understand the coy's biz model and whether the risks taken is in line with the business values and objectives. But its not easy remembering so many different structures and seizing opportunities to think and interact with other experiened risk mgmt folks. Another big challenge is modelling. There are so many assumptions that after a while, you wonder whether the model is even correct. I presume is really all abt of balance. When to be very sharp and identify the various issues. And also to understand the technicas of modelling and how it can be intepreted.

All and all, it was a great dinner with superb company. Tmr i shall talk abit more about character building and various christian views that i'm ever learning and trying very hard to internalise.
